This Happened in America

Cindy Sheehan was arrested for wearing a t-shirt to the State of the Union Address. This happened in America.

U.S. Constitution: First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Clips of Bush's SOTU speech shortly after her arrest:

"Every step toward freedom in the world makes our country safer -- so we will act boldly in freedom's cause. Far from being a hopeless dream, the advance of freedom is the great story of our time."

"No one can deny the success of freedom, but some men rage and fight against it."

"Lacking the military strength to challenge us directly, the terrorists have chosen the weapon of fear. When they murder children at a school in Beslan, or blow up commuters in London, or behead a bound captive, the terrorists hope these horrors will break our will, allowing the violent to inherit the Earth. But they have miscalculated: We love our freedom, and we will fight to keep it."

"Yet we also choose to lead because it is a privilege to serve the values that gave us birth. American leaders -- from Roosevelt to Truman to Kennedy to Reagan -- rejected isolation and retreat, because they knew that America is always more secure when freedom is on the march."

"We will lead freedom's advance."

uh huh.

WOW! Back to the Vietnam era! Of course the irony here is, as with banning books or films, Cindy Sheehan is now more famous than she was before, and her message is out there in a bigger and better way than if they had just left her alone (she's going on the Today Show for God's sake!). Odds are the bought and sold media wouldn't have taken a shot of her at the speech. God bless Cindy. I hope she runs for Senate in California.

US Code Title 40, Chapter 2, Section 193f
(3)to enter or to remain in any room within any of the Capitol Buildings set aside or designated for the use of either House of the Congress or any Member, committee, subcommittee, officer, or employee of the Congress or either House thereof with intent to disrupt the orderly conduct of official business;
(7) to parade, demonstrate, or picket within any of the Capitol Buildings.

US Code Title 40, Subtitle 2, Part B, Chapter 51, Section 5104

Would Cindy Sheehan have been arrested had she been wearing a t-shirt with a pro-war message?

Re: Blake. Do you really see any "intent to parade, demonstrate or picket"? She had in fact said the opposite -- she would watch the speech silently.

Re: George. I think your question is apt, but not really -- because I don't see how, in an of itself, the # of US soldiers killed in Iraq is an "anti-war" message. Indeed, isn't one of Bush's rationales for continuing this pointless war to "honor the fallen"?

Maybe Sheehan was wearing a pro-war message? (Thats a rhetorical quesiton, obviously).

"US Code Title 40, Subtitle 2, Part B, Chapter 51, Section 5104"

Isn't that the section that basically says Dick Cheney should have been arrested for telling Patrick Leahy on the Senate floor to go fuck himself?

And the relevant bit isn't even the section you quoted.

I find it ironic that Cindy would be arrested when the whole address began with honoring Coretta Scott King.

Sheehan is doing the same thing the Kings were doing in the 60's.

40 years later the Kings are heros for their civil rights movements but today Sheehan is a criminal for her movement.

What if Cindy Sheehan were a well-known pro-war activist?

What if this was 2002, and she was wearing a shirt with the number killed on 9/11?

Why are they trying to keep the number of dead and wounded so far outside of the public consciousness?

It's very telling that the admin is afraid of the 2,243 brave US soldiers. That's a lot of skeletons in their closet.

Bush constantly used the word "freedom". Strange that he has no idea about the meaning of the word.

The Capitol police have now apologized, saying they did her wrong. Uh-huh. This is the same outfit that attacked an innocent Chinese tourist, and his luggage, because he was waiting "to see the President" in front of the Capitol. Their responsibility is great; their judgment is not always so perceptive.
